Slot Car Racing...
Racetrack Scenics was founded by Kevin Sharpe and Johan Malan (Joe Han the Man) in 2022
Johan Malan
In the late sixties his Father built him a Slot Car Track, or Scalextric track as we used to call it. Many years have passed and now in his retirement years he has returned to an old passion: Slot Cars!!
It started with a Ninco track and every time a new layout. Then the big decision: It is time for a permanent track, mainly for convenient reasons (not to have to bend to the floor to pick up a de-slotted car.) The permanent layout called for some character, buildings, billboards, footbridge, grandstands, etc. These were rather expensive and hard to get hold of in SA.
The next chapter in this story: He started to use his design skills to design a range of buildings and structures and have them laser cut from 3mm MDF. The pieces were then assembled, glued, painted and branded. The Dunlop Footbridge which was inspired by the bridge at Killarney Raceway in Cape Town in the late sixties, was the first to be completed.
Then the realization: Other people may have the same need and I can supply them.
In summary: This is not a Job, This is Joe Han's Passion.
Kevin Sharpe
Kevin has always loved Slot Car Racing, a Hobby introduced to him by his father Charlie. Originally from the Detroit, Kevin spent every Saturday morning at Tiny Tim Hobby Center
Racing 1/24 scale cars. When Tiny Tim closed, they cut up the tracks and auctioned off everything including the carpet. Heartbroken, Kevin was forced to find new Hobby.. So he became a Musician and Music Producer. While a struggling musician Kevin wore many hats. One of those hats was Supervisor at a Tier 1 Vendor for GM, Ford, and several other Automakers. Eventually the music thing paid off and Kevin opened his own studio in a suburb of Detroit.. after 35 years serving the music community of SE Michigan... Kevin moved his family to Mocksville North Carolina.. And Opened.... Racetrack Scenics.
Together: The birth of Racetrack Scenics.
Kevin asked Johan to help design something special for his layout. That design (The Shell Corner) began a freindship and partnership that is only separated by 9000 miles.
When you order something from RS you are not just getting a bag of wood and paper. You are getting something we put hours of skill and more importantly love into.
It is Wonderful we get to share our love for Slot Cars with you.. We hope you become a part of the Racetrack Scenics story.
